Adopt

Thank you for considering adopting from Take Me Home Pet Rescue! We are a 100% nonprofit organization located in Richardson, Texas.

Adopting from a rescue is such an emotionally rewarding experience, for yourself, your family, and your new pet. By adopting from a rescue organization such as TMHPR, you’re not only giving a homeless animal a new, forever home and the love he/she deserves, you’re also opening up space for our organization to rescue another animal from a shelter’s death row, the streets, or an abusive situation.

It’s a win-win for everyone – with as many as 40 million homeless dogs and cats in the United States alone, there’s no reason at all to spend a small fortune on an animal from a pet store that likely sources its “inventory” from a puppy mill. Whatever breed, size, temperament, or age you prefer, with a little patience, a little legwork, and an open heart, you’re guaranteed to find the perfect new family member in rescue.

Adoption Process

At TMHPR, we work hard to make sure our pets are the best match for your family. Activity level, available time to spend with a new pet, and home environment are important things we consider. We want you to be satisfied with your choice of a new forever family member and will assist you in making the best choice for your family. Our volunteers take pride in our our very low return rate.

Our adoption process is simple and straight-forward:

DISCOVER

First, view our Dogs and Cats on this website, Petfinder, Adopt-a-Pet, or our Facebook page. Please note: we only adopt to the Dallas and surrounding areas as we require a home visit with every adoption.

APPLY

To meet one of our pets, please complete and submit our online Cat or Dog Adoption Application. The form does not obligate you to adopt. Home visits will not be completed without full vet and/or reference checks. Adoption counselors will reply to your application as soon as possible to guide you to the next step.

Please Note: All Applicants/Adopters must be 21 years of age or older

FALL IN LOVE

Once you have submitted the online application and it has been reviewed by our TMHPR Adoption Team, you will be contacted to schedule a time to meet the pet. This will most likely occur during our weekly Saturday Meet & Greet at our Pet Adoption Center between 10 am – 1 pm; or during another time, mutually agreed upon. You will have an opportunity to speak with the foster family to learn more details about the pet.

HOME VISIT/DELIVERY OF PET

Before the home visit the prospective adopter will be provided with a list of supplies they need to have on hand before the pet is delivered. Depending on the circumstances the home visit may be complete prior to the pet being delivered. Or, the pet may be delivered during the home visit. The Adoption Counselor and Home Visit Coordinator will work with you on the details. During the home visit, a member of the TMHPR Home Visit Team will conduct a home safety review, including a fence/gate check to ensure that your fence is secure and locked, and will point out any other potential hazards to your new pet. (The fence/gate check applies to dog home visits only.)  You will then complete the Pet Adoption Contract and the adoption fee is collected.

SETTLING IN

Once the pet is in your home, the 10 day trial period begins. During these next 10 days you will have the opportunity to see if you, your family and your new pet are a good match.  Our fosters and Adoption Counselors are happy to work with you during this time period to answer questions or help with the transition.

FINALIZING

After your 10-day trial period has been completed, you will be contacted by email requesting confirmation that you want to make the pet a permanent part of your family. If yes, we will transfer the microchip into your name using the contact information you provided on the Adoption Contract. If you do not wish to adopt the pet we will return your fee in exchange for the pet.

We require that the pet ALWAYS be returned to TMHPR if there is ever a circumstance that you can no longer care for the pet.  This is a part of the TMHPR contract that will be completed.

POST ADOPTION

We encourage all adoptive pet parents to send us updates, pictures and videos of their new family members so that we can share the good news with our community. Watch our Facebook page and Instagram Feed for Happy Tail adoption updates.

Working in rescue has more than its share of challenges, tragedies and heartbreak, but knowing that the animals we’ve saved and fostered are now in loving, forever homes always inspire and motivate us to continue our life-saving work.

Please Note: All Applicants/Adopters must be 21 years of age or older.
